Cyclists all set for John O'Groats to Land's End epic

A biking team of up to 30 riders has embarked on a cycling tour that runs the full length of the country.

The End 2 End Challenge began at John O'Groats on Saturday 23 August and is set to finish at Land's End one week later.

Riders are taking part in the cycling tour to raise money for the Wooden Spoon charity, which works to raise money for young people's organisations.

The charity says that the End 2 End biking trail is ‘without doubt the most taxing yet fulfilling of the Spoon challenges’, which sees bike riding participants backed up by support vehicles and provided with accommodation along the route.

It adds that those on the cycling tour will get the opportunity to see Britain as never before: ‘From the inspiring mountains of Scotland, the lake lands of northern England, through the outstanding scenery of the Wye Valley, up and down the Devon hills, to the rugged Cornish coast’.

For those looking for rather more easy-going hiking and biking trails, Walk in Scotland recommends a 5-kilometre John O'Groats coastal walk.

The walking trail begins at the harbour at John O’Groats and follows the path around Ness of Duncansby onto the sandy beach at the Bay of Sannick before returning by the same route. The walk can be followed on the OS Explorer Map 451: Thurso & John O’Groats.
