Rugby star Wilkinson supports National Trust campaign
19 August 2008
Rugby star Jonny Wilkinson has given his backing to a National Trust campaign to save a heritage property in the north-east of England.
The organisation has already pledged £6.9 million but says it needs to raise a further £6.3 million before Christmas in order to acquire Seaton Delaval Hall.
Jonny Wilkinson has donated a signed photograph of himself and a signed copy of his book on how to play rugby, which the charity is to put up for auction to generate funds.
The rugby union player commented: ‘I would urge everyone to take pride in this impressive example of British history and support The National Trust® in [its] campaign to save and protect this truly remarkable treasure’.
Liz Fisher, National Trust area manager, thanked the rugby star for his generosity and urged all residents of the north-east to help save the ‘amazing’ property.
Any visitors on walking holidays or heading off for a biking tour of the area may wish to visit Seaton Delaval Hall and its surrounding gardens, which were designed in 1947 by James Russell.
The property, designed by Sir John Vanbrugh, was built between 1718 and 1728.
