People 'seeking outdoor activity holidays'
31 July 2008
People increasingly want to take part in outdoor activities while they are on holiday, one expert has said this week.
According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito), group-activity holidays, such as walking trips, are gaining popularity as they make a change from the normal kind of city break.
Ian Bradley, a spokesperson for Aito, said that the change had come about at a time when people are more ‘concerned about obesity and their lifestyles’.
‘People work very hard at the moment, and when they are away on holidays they want to feel that they are being active as well,’ he added.
Recent research from travel experiences company Isango!® reveals that activity holidays are increasing at a rate of 67% compared to beach breaks, which are growing in popularity by 66%.
Furthermore, research company Mintel® claims that by the end of 2008 holidays based around outdoor activity, such as biking or hiking, will account for 1 in 8 breaks. In 2003 this figure stood at 1 in 10, indicating people's growing desire to explore the great outdoors while on their holidays.
