Cycling stars head to Newport
20 August 2007
Three of the UK’s top names in cycling will head to Shropshire next month for the upcoming Newport Nocturne.
Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas will compete in the evening bike race fresh from the Tour de France, reports the Newport Advertiser®.
They will join Rob Hayles on the start line in a one-lap challenge, dubbed the ‘Battle for Beijing’, as part of the annual event.
Promoter Nick Jeggo told the newspaper that he is ‘delighted’ the 1 September cycling fiesta has attracted some of the nation’s Olympic hopefuls.
‘They are all going to race in a one-lap event, which we are billing as the “Battle of Beijing” in preparation for the Olympics next year.
‘It's a real coup to be able to bring these great riders to our little town.’
Organisers of the Newport Nocturne claim that the event is the ‘most thrilling’ free evening of sport, music and food available in the UK.
