Junior cycling Tour of Wales approaches
20 August 2007
The world’s best young cyclists will be peddling over to Wales later this month to compete in the RIS Junior Tour of Wales.
Taking place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, the three-day race travels through Gwent, Dyfed and Powys counties and the Brecon Beacons mountain range in the south-east.
The race starts with a prologue time trial, which is followed by three road-race stages and a circuit race, before a final stage that includes a five-mile climb up Tumble Mountain, at a steep 10% angle.
In previous years riders have come from Holland, France, Ireland and America, among other countries, and winners have gone on to ride for top continental teams.
David Millar, Charlie Wegelius and Geraint Thomas, who all competed in this year’s Tour de France, all rode the Tour of Wales in their youth.
The event, now in its 27th year, is open to any rider aged between 16 and 18, and female riders of any age.
