Green travel in London celebrated at Cycle Show
22 October 2007
Cycling in London was championed for its environmental benefits at the annual Cycle Show held on 11 - 14 October.
Transport for London (TfL) offered visitors of the Cycle Show at Earls Court a light-hearted take on the range of different road and weather conditions cyclists may experience. The organisation set up a track around a scaled-down version of the capital for children at the event to ride around, complete with miniature versions of Big Ben and Tower Bridge.
Jenny Jones, the Mayor of London's Green Transport Advisor, said: ‘2007 has been the year of the bike, with London hosting the Tour de France Grand Depart, the start of the Tour of Britain® and the Hovis® London Freewheel.
‘These events have all helped to build on the real enthusiasm for cycling in the capital, leading to a massive 83% increase in cycling.’
She added that the cycle test tracks were designed to ‘encourage people to start cycling to school or work’.
TfL will invest £36 million in cycling between 2007 and 2008 compared with £5.5 million in 2000, with funding concentrated on improving cycling infrastructure, promotion and education.
