Cumbria in gear for Bike Fest
01 May 2007
Cyclists of all ages are being encouraged to head to Cumbria next month to participate in the county's Bike Fest.
The week is split into two equally exciting events.
From 7–11 May it is Open House Week, during which there will be opportunities to join a number of rides, from gentle stretches along the Solway Coast and Arnside to 60-mile jaunts from Workington to Whitehaven.
There will be rides for both tourers and mountain bikers, with the latter offered the opportunity to join a ride around Coniston or a more challenging effort up the Hartside road pass in Penrith.
The Bike Fest Long Weekend takes place from 11–13 May at Lowther Deer Park in Penrith, where there will be events such as demonstrations from stunt jumping riding teams and workshops to help you improve your own riding.
‘The health benefits of cycling are huge. Even a new cyclist covering just a short distance each day can reduce their risk of dying from a heart attack by up to 22%,’ said Cumbria County Council’s cycling for health officer, Nikki Campbell.
