Pupils Bike It for autumn treats
04 October 2007
Pupils in Swindon picked apples and blackberries yesterday as they cycled to Cowleaze Copse as part of a Sustrans® campaign.
Around 30 children from Chiseldon Primary left the school at 9.30 am to cycle the National Cycle Network Route 45.
Bike It is a project run by sustainable transport charity Sustrans, which is aiming to encourage young children to ‘choose two wheels instead of four’.
The event, which is in its second year, is being supported by 12 schools this year.
Ruth James, Sustrans’ Bike It officer for Swindon, said: ‘This is the first event of the new school year and the follow-up to last year’s hugely successful “big bike biknik"’.
She added that for many children who participated in the event it was their first time cycling this route, which boasts an ‘abundance of juicy apples and blackberries’.
Students in the area will continue to work with Ruth over the next academic year, learning about reflective clothing, cycling safety and bike maintenance.
According to Sustrans, the Bike It campaign has already seen cycling levels rise to 10% in participating schools and town in England.
