Brits' driving costs on the rise
01 May 2007
The cost of driving for British motorists has risen to some £51 billion a year, figures from insurance firm Zurich® suggest.
Day-to-day costs see car owners shell out £1 776.62 on items such as fuel, vehicle tax, maintenance and parking – and three quarters of those surveyed said that owning a car encourages them to budget carefully.
Almost a third of motorists, though, said that the expense of driving prompts them to take the ostensibly healthier option of walking instead.
Mark Searles, Chief Marketing Officer at Zurich Insurance, spoke of a worrying trend that the survey picked up relating to drivers skimping on some essential outgoings to ease their cash flow.
He said: ‘The cost of motoring has risen dramatically over the past few years, putting drivers under increasing financial pressure. The most worrying findings from our research are those that show some drivers are risking their own and others’ safety in a bid to save money.’
