Devon’s road network gets green light

Devon County Council has picked up a top award for its efforts to map the county’s road network.

The authority was recognised at the 2007 National Street Gazetteer awards ceremony, which celebrated ‘transformational government’, where it won the Best Gazetteer Integration award together with the NSG Best Business Integration accolade.

Council representatives have been mapping the region to help visitors travel around the county on improved road surfaces, making it easier for travellers to reach their hotels and bed and breakfasts.

Judges of the award said that the whole system, which the local authority has implemented, has been built to serve the public in ‘an improved and more efficient way’.

Many ramblers visit Devon for its scenic walking trails, and cyclists in the region can enjoy bike rides around its varied landscape.

Seaside resorts such as Plymouth and Torquay offer visitors the chance to enjoy the south west coast of England, and sightseers can try their hand at outdoor activities such as surfing and sailing.
