Redcar plans seafront revival

The seafront at Redcar is to undergo a major regeneration project aimed at boosting tourism and business in the town.

A competition is to be held to design extra facilities to complement the Environment Agency's £14 million sea wall refurbishment.

Redcar, on the North Sea coast, attracts one million visitors each year. Situated at the very edge of North Yorkshire, it is home to the UK's oldest lifeboat, the Zetland.

A seaside resort in its own right, Redcar is also the perfect location from which to explore the northernmost parts of the North Yorkshire Moors, or to head north into County Durham.

The area to be regenerated will cover all the public spaces from The Stray to Coatham Boating Lake, the length of the new wall.

The Borough Council Chief Executive said: ‘The seafront area is a key component of the town’s visitor and commercial offer’.

The competition will be run by the Royal Institute of British Architects®.
