Head to Newburgh for outdoors activities
28 May 2008
Fans of outdoors activities will be heading to Newburgh in Scotland this year for an annual sporting event.
During the third week of June the Newburgh Highland Games and Coble Boat Race will take place, providing revellers with the chance to explore the area and enjoy some historic sporting pursuits.
The boat race, which dates back to the 1880s, takes place on the River Tay, while other traditional games – such as hammer-throwing, shot-putting and caber-tossing – will take place throughout the event.
Games will be organised in a natural amphitheatre in Mugdrum Estate, giving them an outdoorsy feel that fans of the countryside may appreciate.
Other events organised throughout the week will include running events, ranging in length from 90 metres to 1 600 metres.
Cyclists will also be challenged to take part in races of between 800 metres and 4 800 metres.
Highland dancing and piping will be the focus of evening entertainment, while a disco and beer tent will also be on hand for the more modern revellers.
Newburgh is located on the south bank of the Tay estuary and is near the Fife/Perthshire border.
Prices for the games will vary from £2 for a concession to £10 for a family ticket and those hoping to take part are advised to book in advance.
