Abseil challenge in Newport
13 May 2008
Daredevils are being invited to test their wits at an event in Newport this summer.
On 31 May the Abseil Challenge will take place at the Newport Transporter Bridge, giving those aged over 16 the chance to tackle the 54-metre descent.
Participants will abseil from the end of the beam bridge on the west bank of the River Usk and will land above the car park by the visitor centre, where event organisers will cheer their bravery.
Technical expert Mike Herbert will be positioned on the bridge to offer encouragement and support, as well as safety advice.
Another five technical team members will be on hand to make sure that everything goes smoothly and that the day is as enjoyable as possible.
There will also be a rope rescue demonstration during the day by a crew of firefighters.
Newport is described by the city council as an area surrounded by ‘beautiful landscapes’ and it notes that the region features an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
For walking fans it is less than an hour's drive from the Beacons National Park and Forest of Dean, and also offers lovers of outdoor activities the chance to explore a range of castles.
