South Devon experiences bumper tourist boost
09 August 2007
The south Devon region is experiencing something of a tourism boom, with the town of Torbay in particular seeing rising visitor numbers, according to reports.
Temperatures at the weekend hit 26 °C and Torbay’s Tourist Information has seen a 15% rise in visitors using their services, reports the South Devon Herald Press.
The new call-centre facility at the tourist office has also seen a 45% jump in phone calls and accommodation bookings.
Avivia Pearson, Torbay Director of Tourism, said: ‘These figures are fantastic news and just go to show that bad weather doesn't deter our visitors.
‘It's great to see our services are being exploited to their full potential, while the increases in gift sales suggest we are starting to attract the sort of visitors vital for a healthy future.
‘It's looking good for a healthy summer and we look forward to welcoming millions more to the English Riviera.’
She added that coach ticket sales for day trips have increased by 40%.
