English seaside resorts to be ‘regenerated’

English seaside resorts are to receive funding for their regeneration, the Government has announced.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has dedicated £45 million over the next three years, in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund, to revitalise the coastal resorts, which are popular with many Brits seeking a weekend break.

Culture Secretary James Purnell said: ‘England’s coastal resorts are a much-loved part of our heritage, but it’s a sad fact that many have been in decline in recent decades.

‘We know that public investment in cultural projects and public spaces can give a huge kick start to local regeneration…some of our finest, historical coastal resorts will be given a new lease of life.’

Regional development agencies, English Heritage®, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council together with the Arts Council England will all oversee the project.

England has many seaside resorts that attract walking enthusiasts, tourists and outdoor activity seekers from far and wide. Blackpool, Newquay and Scarborough are some of England's best known and best loved seaside towns that could benefit from the new funding.
