Lord Mayor’s Show coming to London
29 October 2007
Preparations are underway for the annual Lord Mayor’s Show in London next month.
The Lords Mayor’s procession winds through the streets of London to mark the rich history of the capital city, in what is being billed as a ‘great day out’ for half a million people, with many more watching the event live on the BBC®.
Kicking off at 11.00 am on Saturday 10 November at Mansion House, after an RAF fly-past, the procession is over-three miles long and will finish at the Royal Courts of Justice, where the Lord Mayor will take an oath of allegiance to the sovereign.
As participants are walking along the last stretch of Victoria Embankment at 4.00 pm, a firework display will begin from a barge moored in Thames between Blackfriars and Waterloo bridges.
Event organisers described the historic significance of the city: ‘In the 17th century [London] was inconvenienced by the building site that would later become St Paul’s Cathedral. In the 20th it was the first event ever to be broadcast live on television.’
As well as celebrating London's history, the event aims to incorporate cultural aspects of modern-day London and will feature military marching bands ‘uniting with urban hip-hop sounds’ as well as ‘inner-city kids’ strutting their stuff alongside City workers.
