Lottery grant to create 'natural havens'
10 October 2007
The National Lottery has awarded a £25 million grant to Natural England's Access to Nature Scheme, which aims to create ‘natural havens’ all over Great Britain.
Access to Nature funds projects in rural, urban and coastal areas that will encourage more people to enjoy their local countryside.
Alan Titchmarsh, who is backing the scheme, said: ‘Nothing gives me greater pleasure than getting close to nature, so I'm delighted to support this scheme, which is going to broaden the opportunities for people to do just that.’
He added that the grant would ‘bring our communities together’ to rejuvenate new and existing natural places.
The award comes from part of the Big Lottery Fund Changing Spaces programme, which aims to improve rural and urban environments throughout English communities.
Natural England protects areas of biodiversity and rich ecosystems such as nature reserves, national parks and outstanding areas of natural beauty.
National parks in Great Britain are located in Brecon Beacons, Cairngorms, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, and Snowdonia, to name but a few.
