Harrogate’s historic baths saved
Harrogate’s historic Starbeck Baths have been rescued by a £760 000 cash injection to save them from closure.
The funds will be spent over a 10-year period to regenerate the Victorian baths, which are a popular tourist attraction for those on days out in the area.
Dating back to 1870, the Starbeck Baths – formerly known as the Prince of Wales Baths – will be able to improve its facilities for those visiting the old spa town.
The pool has an average temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit, which is warmer than most pools, and operates on two programmes in school term time and the school holidays
New funding has been provided by Harrogate’s Leisure Fund after a long campaign to save the baths.
Councillor Andrew Jones said that the council has a ‘very detailed knowledge’ about what is needed and unless there are some ‘major unforeseen problems’, the newly acquired funds will be spent on the plant room and customer facilities.
For those considering a UK holiday in Harrogate, other nearby attractions include Brimham Rocks, which stand at a height of nearly 300 metres in the Nidderdale area of outstanding beauty, and Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal estate, which is listed as a World Heritage Site.
