Great Britain's 25 ultimate experiences
21 May 2007
The Rough Guides travel series has named its top 25 'ultimate experiences' in Britain, to celebrate 25 years of the guides.
While soaking up the Edinburgh Festival topped the list, map lovers will be interested to learn that walking the Pembrokeshire coastal path was listed at number two.
Wandering Borrowdale in the Lake District was placed at number five, and cycling in the New Forest made it to number seven.
The River Cam also made its way into the top three: navigating the river in a punt – a flat bottomed boat – came third.
Those looking for a wilder encounter with the water might try surfing in Newquay, which was listed at number 9, or even breathing the sea air in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull (Scotland), at number 10.
Other outdoor activities in the top 25 included hiking in Snowdonia and walking on Dartmoor, at 11 and 17 respectively.
Mark Ellingham, series editor and Rough Guides founder, said: ‘When we think of holidays, a lot of people immediately associate this to going abroad. But believe it or not, you don't actually need to jump on a plane to have an amazing time.
The Rough Guides were founded 25 years ago by Mark Ellingham and Martin Dunford.
